Adult Orthodontics vs. Kids Orthodontics

But often, we hear patients ask us: is there a difference between orthodontics for adults and orthodontics for children? While both adult and pediatric orthodontics use the same fundamental techniques and technologies, there are a few key differences between these two forms of treatment.

The Difference Between Kids' and Adult Braces

So, what separates adult and early orthodontic treatment? For starters, some changes are easily accomplished during early orthodontic treatment that can't be made during adult treatment. These changes can't be made because of the physiology of an adult patient different than a child. During childhood, the upper jaw is two separate pieces of bone, split down the middle of the roof of the mouth. Because these pieces are apart and still growing, we can use specialized instruments to push them apart and cause more bone to grow in between, effectively widening the mouth and making more room for teeth. In adults, the jaws are finished developing and can't be altered in this way.

Furthermore, adults are more prone to certain problems that aren't an issue for kids. Adults are more susceptible to gum disease, which means periodontal difficulties are more of an issue during adult orthodontics. Adults are also at a higher risk for tooth root resorption, in which the body reabsorbs the roots of teeth, often causing them to fall out. Although a rare problem, still something to be mindful of during adult orthodontic treatment.
