Common Orthodontic Problems

Underbite

underbiteUnderbite occurs when the lower jaw extends out past the upper jaw. Usually, the upper front teeth will sit inside the lower teeth.

Spacing

spacingSpacing problems occur when there are gaps between the teeth. Sometimes this may be due to missing teeth or improper alignment, and while it can be a purely cosmetic issue, it can also affect bite function.

Upper Front Teeth Protrusion

protrusionThis problem occurs when the front teeth jut out too far forward over the lower teeth, impacting bite function and the appearance of the smile.

Crowding

crowdingCrowding occurs when there isn't enough space in the dental arch to accommodate all the teeth, causing the teeth to grow in crooked. Crowding affects bite function and can make it harder to keep teeth clean.

Crossbite

crossbiteCharacterized by upper teeth that sit inside the lower teeth. Crossbites can cause tooth stratification, impaired bite function, uneven tooth wear, and problems with jaw growth.

Overbite

overbiteWhen the upper teeth extend too far out over the lower teeth, impairing bite function and the appearance of the smile, it is known as an overbite. In extreme cases, the lower teeth may even bite into the roof of the mouth. Depending on the severity of the overbite, it can be dangerous for the person.

Openbite

openbiteOpenbite occurs when the upper and lower front teeth don't come together when the mouth is closed. Often caused by prolonged thumb sucking, openbite can affect bite function, smile, and speech.

Mismatched Dental Midlines

midlinesThis problem occurs when the back bite fits together improperly, impairing jaw growth and bite function and potentially causing TMJ issues. This condition can sometimes also require jaw surgery.
