We all know the power of a big, beautiful smile — the type of smile that can light up a room and exude a strong sense of confidence. However, not everyone is born with a smile that they love. In fact, fewer than half of American adults feel confident with their smiles.1 But that doesn’t mean a person cannot obtain the smile of their dreams. Today, one in four orthodontic patients receiving aligner or braces treatment is an adult, according to the American Association of Orthodontists, and moving healthy teeth is safe even into one’s 70s and beyond.

Now there are now more options available. The Spark™ Clear Aligner System is a great choice for active adults who want effective treatment that is nearly invisible for others to see. Spark Aligners are a new doctor-directed clear aligner system that offers several key benefits over the competition and is well-suited for active lifestyles and busy professional careers. Spark is manufactured by Ormco, a global orthodontics company that orthodontists around the world trust for high-quality, innovative treatment solutions.

What are clear teeth aligners and how do clear aligners work?

Let’s begin with a basic primer. Clear aligners are nearly transparent, custom-made “trays” that tightly fit a patient’s teeth. Made from a plastic-like material, aligners are made to fit a patient’s teeth at different stages of his or her treatment. Each set of aligners is worn for one-three weeks, at least 22 hours a day, before moving on to the next set. Each aligner set is engineered to move the teeth incrementally, per the orthodontist’s treatment plan, until the desired alignment is reached. Tooth-colored attachments on the teeth will help aligners move teeth properly.3 Aligners can treat most mild and moderate cases of overbite, underbite, crossbite, open bite, crowding, and spacing. There may be instances where aligners may not be right for some severe cases. An orthodontic assessment can provide an accurate diagnosis and best treatment recommendations for you.

Key benefits Spark Aligners offer busy adults:

  1. Clarity: One of the main reasons people choose clear aligners is for their discreteness. Spark Aligners are made with the latest innovation in clear aligner material (called TruGEN™), are nearly invisible and more clear than the leading aligner brand.4 This can keep you feeling confident and at your best throughout treatment as you move from meetings and workplace interactions to special events and evenings out.
  2. Comfort: Spark Aligners have scalloped and smoother edges and are more comfortable than the leading aligner brand.
  3. Faster Treatment: Nobody wants to be in treatment longer than needed. Spark’s TruGEN™ material is designed for more efficient tooth movement than the leading aligner brand. This can lead to faster treatment and fewer office visits.6

If you’ve been thinking about getting clear aligners for a child or yourself, but are not sure how you’ll pay for them, you are not alone. Orthodontic treatment is one of the top investments adults make for their children or themselves (adults are 25% of all treatments1). While the cost of doctor-prescribed and managed treatment with clear aligners can range from $3,500-$8,0002, on average, the impact of a beautiful smile is intended for a lifetime. If you are like most people, you are wondering how to pay for clear aligners. This article will share a few tips that may make getting braces more affordable.

1. Use Pre-Tax Dollars from a Health Savings Account (HSA) to Pay for Clear Aligner Treatment

Many employers offer a type of savings account that lets you set aside money on a pre-tax basis to pay for qualified medical expenses. This is called a Health Savings Account (HSA). It also can be called a Flexible Spending Account or FSA. By using untaxed dollars in a HSA or FSA to pay for deductibles, co-payments, or other related expenses, you may be able to lower your overall health care costs. If you have an HSA or FSA account, see what medical expenses are considered “qualified” under your plan.8 Uncovered orthodontic costs such as your monthly payments may be eligible toward your cap and to be paid with your set-aside pre-tax dollars.

FSAs usually are “use it or lose it” each year in terms of the pre-tax dollars you have set aside. Check your account or with your employer to see what amount of savings set aside is unused. If you don’t have enough in this calendar year to cover your balance, you can wait a few months until the new year of pre-tax dollars is funded. Best yet is if you can pay from your FSA account over multiple years. Check your policy rules.

2. Ask About Payment Plans

Many orthodontists are willing to work with their patients by offering interest-free payment plans. Payment plans enable patients to spread out their payments over months or years to make treatment more affordable.

3. Ask About Discounts

For some people, the monthly charge of aligner treatment is not a challenge but getting the best price is their goal. Some doctors are willing to reduce their overall price of treatment if you pay them upfront or pay in cash. This discount can be 5-10 percent off the total cost.

Other orthodontists may offer a family discount if you have already had one or more members of your immediate family receive orthodontic treatment from the same doctor/practice.

It doesn’t hurt to ask about available discount programs just in case one is available, and it lowers your price.

4. Take Good Care During Clear Aligner Treatment

The cost of treatment with aligners can increase beyond your quoted budget/financing program if you damage or lose your aligners during treatment or retainer following treatment. The cost of replacements is not covered under most insurance plans.
